Music is a universal language. Just as spoken language has grammar, music has theory — the structured rules that turn sound into vocabulary, phrases, and stories. This book launches the Grier Method series, equipping teachers to deliver maximum value and students to speak the language of music with confidence. The Grier Method – Book 1: Theory Foundations gives music educators and dedicated students a clear, sequential roadmap to master those foundations efficiently.

Developed from over 20 years of teaching and performing, this first volume in the Grier Method series presents core music theory concepts the same way a spoken language is taught: starting with the alphabet of notes, building words (scales and modes), exploring relationships (intervals, chords, and progressions), and finally learning to read and write the language. Designed as a practical resource for private instructors, classroom teachers, and self-motivated learners, it enables consistent, measurable progress by identifying a student’s starting point and building knowledge in an optimized step by step sequence.

With clear diagrams, piano keyboard visuals, memory aids, tuning exercises using drones, and built-in assessment materials, the book prioritizes practical application over pure academia. It emphasizes that theory alone is insufficient — guided instruction, experience, and mentorship unlock its full power. Ideal for educators seeking a versatile curriculum and students aiming to build improvisation skills faster by mastering the foundational “grammar” of music.

Key topics include:

  • The physics of sound waves, pitch, consonance/dissonance, and human hearing range
  • Equal temperament, the musical alphabet, and piano visualization
  • Diatonic scales, modes, scale degrees, and qualities
  • Intervals, inversions, and consonance/dissonance
  • Triads, 7th chords, chord inversions, chord symbols, and chord/scale theory
  • Chord progressions, common patterns, and voice leading
  • Written music: staff, clefs, ledger lines, grand staff, note/rest values, articulation, time signatures, measures, and rhythm counting
  • Beyond the essentials: sharps/flats, enharmonics, the chromatic scale, major scale, keys, the Circle of 5ths, key signatures
  • Mental practice and sight-reading strategies
  • Practical guidance on private lessons, recommended resources
  • Complete scale lists for all major modes
Ben Grier

Ben Cooper Grier is a saxophonist, educator, and author whose work bridges formal music training with extensive real-world performance experience. He graduated from the University of Florida in 2016 with a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education and a minor in Jazz Studies. At UF Grier was an active participant in the developing jazz program, serving as lead alto and jazz tenor in the University of Florida Jazz Ensemble, and he received multiple scholarships, including the Gary Langford Jazz Scholarship (twice) and the Kenneth Webster Saxophone Scholarship (three times). Ben was also recognized by the Gainesville Friends of Jazz for his contributions to the Gainesville Jazz Festival.

Grier’s performance career began early. After high school he briefly toured with the Glenn Miller Orchestra and has since performed with a wide range of ensembles, including the Harry Wuest Jazz Orchestra, the Florida Gateway College Jazz Band, the SEC All-Star Big Band, the SEC All-Star Jazz Combo, Sister Hazel, What It Is, and many jazz, blues, R&B, soul, and wedding ensembles throughout North Central Florida. He also performed in multiple university and community productions of Broadway musicals, among them City of Angels, Guys and Dolls, Oklahoma, Cinderella, The King and I, and West Side Story. These experiences, combined with hundreds of private lessons taught through his own studio, informed Ben’s approach to teaching improvisation and theory. Additional professional activities have included the Jazz Education Network Conference (Antigua Winds exhibitor), the UF Gordon Goodwin Jazz Camp, and the UF Brazilian Music Institute.

Drawing on his academic studies, insights from mentors (including Tony Buzzella, JT Taylor, Harry Wuest, Ben Champion, Dave Becker, and Scott Wilson), and his professional playing, Ben authored The Grier Method book series. Throughout his career he has emphasized making jazz and improvisation accessible, combining rigorous musicianship with a clear, experience-based teaching philosophy.
