Inspires, guides, and reinforces behavior—these are a few ways to describe how culture affects us. Culture influences an organization and the people connected to it in many ways. It is there whether we choose to acknowledge it or not. In fact, it would be difficult to identify an area in our lives where culture isn’t present. Although culture may not be easily identified it constantly impacts the environments we work or play in.

Build, Maintain and Live Your Culture attempts to explain the various aspects of culture and its impact on an organization through the personal experiences shared by individuals working in the world of sport, specifically from the sport of football (soccer). While sport is the backdrop, the examples provided can be easily applied to other cultural environments as the transferability of these experiences and the actions taken can be adapted to meet the challenges that exist in differing environments.

Exploring how culture is the foundation upon which organizations are built and the need for leaders who understand the cultural challenges confronting an organization’s growth and development is a critical component of any organization’s strategic plan. By highlighting the principles and elements of culture-building and culture-maintenance required of any organization, leadership better understands their importance within the organization and their role in creating the desired cultural environment.

Build, Maintain and Live Your Culture focuses on building and maintaining culture and the many challenges facing leadership as they strive to create a strong, positive cultural environment for their organization!

Tim Carter

Coach, Educator, Academy Director, Director of Youth Development, Scout, Consultant and a successful Business Owner are just some of the roles that have been a part of a rich and deep experience in football at all levels and has extended for well over 40+ years.

Coaching at Youth, Collegiate, National Teams, and Professional levels, Carter has been named “Coach of the Year” by the Illinois Youth Soccer Association, the United Soccer Coaches Association (formerly the NSCAA), and the US Soccer Federation as the “Academy Coach of the Year” for three consecutive years while leading his U18 Development Academy teams to the USDA National Championship Final in 2013 and to the DA quarter-finals in 2014 and 2015.

As an educator, Carter has served as the interim Director of Coaching for the US Soccer national coaching schools, as well as an instructor for the A, B, C and D Licenses. In addition, he has been a mentor for US Soccer’s Academy Director courses (now Technical Leader course) as well as serving as a member of the federation’s coach education study group, commissioned to develop an instructional course for Youth Directors of Coaching.

Serving as the Academy Director, Carter founded and directed the nationally recognized residential program at Shattuck-St. Mary’s School for over ten years before joining Major League Soccer for the second time in his career as the Academy Director for Minnesota United in 2016. Under his coaching and direction, numerous players have represented their country at youth and senior national team levels, or have gone on to sign a professional contract with an MLS club or with a professional club located outside of the U.S.

In between coaching stints, Carter served US Soccer as a full-time National Staff Coach and later as the Director of Youth Development. During this time, he worked closely with National Team Coaches on the elements for Project 2010 that included several first-time initiatives, such as the U14 National Development Program, a national scouting network, youth club development, and the first International Coaching Exchange between US Soccer and the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB).

Carter has worked with numerous organizations in the US and abroad to further the growth and development of the sport both on and off the field. Holding an “A” License, Youth Technical Directors License, Talent Scout License, and Coach Educators Certificate from US Soccer, as well as an Advanced Coaching Certificate from the KNVB, and a Mentorship Certificate from the United Soccer Coaches Association.
